Latest Ukraine News – Putin and China threaten global stability with a ‘dangerous, chaotic, divided world’ warns the West

Could Vladimir Putin be arrested?

The chances of Putin facing trial at the International Criminal Court are low – but not impossible.

The ICC has no power to arrest suspects – and can only exercise jurisdiction within the countries that have signed the agreement.

But a bold legal move would force the 123 member states of the court to arrest Putin and transfer him to The Hague for trial if he sets foot on their territory.

“This makes Putin an outcast,” said Stephen Rapp, the US ambassador-at-large for war crime issues under former president Barack Obama.

“If he travels, he risks arrest. This will never go away. Russia cannot escape sanctions if it doesn’t comply with the orders.”

Ken Roth, the former executive director of Human Rights Watch, has previously said that history has shown that dictators who try to evade international arrest warrants will ultimately be punished.

“Even if not today, the time will come when, most likely, Putin will be appointed supreme commander-in-chief presiding over the Kremlin’s strategy to combat war crimes,” he told the newspaper. I.

“Putin can calculate that he can sit idly in the Kremlin and never have to worry about prosecution by the ICC, but that would require him to be president for life – a difficult goal to achieve. maintain.

Jonathan Leader Maynard, a lecturer in international politics at King’s College London, said the arrest warrant may not bother Putin.

He told BBC The ICC “relies on the cooperation of governments to actually detain people, and the Russian government is clearly not going to cooperate in this regard”.

But he said it could affect Putin’s freedom of movement around the world as other countries could assist in his arrest.

It is unlikely that Putin will be extradited as it is not a signatory to the ICC.
